Greying China taps rural elderly to care for those even older

By Li Hui and Maxim Duncan

QIANTUN, China (Reuters) - Two years short of 70, Zhang Guosheng spends his days caring for an 81-year-old fellow villager - washing his clothes, bringing meals to his bed, and keeping him company - a routine he'll keep up until he himself needs the type of care he is now giving.

"Living here is better than staying at home alone. We help each other and have a common language," said the spritely Zhang, an enthusiastic dancer. "We are very happy here."

With younger villagers who would traditionally have looked after their parents and grandparents flocking to the booming cities to seek work as part of Beijing's urbanization drive, Qiantun village in northern China's Hebei province has had to pioneer a new model - the old looking after the even older.

Surrounded by green wheat fields that stretch across a flat plain, Qiantun is unremarkable among countless rural Chinese communities, but its old-age care model is now a prototype cited by central government as a solution to the daunting challenge of caring for a vast and rapidly greying rural population.

One of every four Chinese will be older than 60 by 2030, according to the Ministry of Civil Affairs.

Massive rural-to-urban migration will further strain the rural areas' ability to provide care for the elderly, as personal savings and family support remain the primary pillars of old-age care.

"Migrants to urban areas are mainly young adults, leaving mostly the elderly in villages with children," said Wang Dewen, an expert with the World Bank's Beijing office. "The formal eldercare system in rural areas is very weak, and basically a blank spot in many places."

As a result, the gap between the number of elderly in rural and urban areas is expected to balloon over the next 15 years, to 11 percentage points from today's 1.24 percentage points, the ministry projects.

The costs of caring for China's rapidly expanding elderly population are likely to be too heavy a burden for the government, forcing Beijing to find cost-effective and creative ways to provide care in myriad localities. The self-help model practiced among the 1,500 residents of Qiantun offers a cheaper and streamlined alternative to a state-run system.

More than 95 percent of China's rural elderly still adhere to the traditional practice of seeking old-age care within their families, Wang said. But families are no longer able to cope, with youth and even middle-aged people heading to cities to find work, leaving the elderly behind to fend for themselves.

THE "LIGHT" OF FEIXIANG

In their search for affordable eldercare models, Beijing's leaders have turned their attention 450 km (280 miles) to the south in Hebei's Feixiang county, where Qiantun lies. The practice of old people taking care of each other posed a simple and attractive solution.

Labeled "mutual assist eldercare", the Feixiang model is set to be expanded to the rest of rural China, with 3 billion yuan ($490 million) set aside by the central government to get it started over the coming three years.

"The light of Feixiang will shine across China," Li Liguo, minister of civil affairs, declared enthusiastically during a trip to Feixiang in 2011. "Feixiang has set an example for the whole country."

But not everyone is as optimistic about the model.

"As people get older, they don't tend to get healthier. So if you have somebody in their sixties caring for somebody in their nineties, are they going to be able, and trained and strong enough themselves to care for somebody who has chronic conditions?" said Tony Buccheri, a manager with Right at Home International, a U.S.-based senior home care provider that offers services in China through a partner.

Buccheri's concern echoes that of Cai Qingyang, pioneer of the model and Qiantun's village chief.

"Old people with critical illnesses need more than the very basic care provided here, and we will have to think of other ways to care for them," said the 61 year-old former soldier Cai, watching several old villagers dancing in the yard.

"But this really is the only feasible way given the local elder care situation. The village and the government simply can't afford proper institutional care for every aged rural resident," Cai added.

In 2008, Cai sought to do something about the lack of care for rural elderly left behind as young adults sought better paying work in cities. He turned an abandoned brick house into an old-age home, where 25 elderly villagers moved into 11 rooms, keeping each other company, sharing meals, as well as farming and doing housework.

His innovation has thrived under state support and more than a dozen other provinces have replicated the model.

OLD BEFORE RICH

What separates China's ageing pattern from that in other Asian societies such as Japan, South Korea and Singapore is that the country is still relatively poor on a per capita basis. The phrase "getting old before rich" reflects the fact that even though China's economic growth remains robust, its demographics work against it.

Those in the emerging middle class have more options among at-home care providers, and public as well as private senior homes, and are more likely to find them affordable.

The rural elderly have fewer resources and fewer choices, while youth migration patterns unstitch the traditional family safety net. And despite years of efforts by China's leaders, the income gap between urban and rural residents has increased. A report published by the World Bank last year noted that rural elderly have "remained consistently poorer than the urban elderly over time".

Nor is that likely to change. Two-thirds of elderly Chinese currently live in rural areas, and although migration patterns cloud demographic estimates, many demographers believe the majority of China's elderly will remain in the countryside.

To meet the challenge, says the World Bank's Wang, China must make its urbanization an equalizer of basic social services for urban and rural residents. To do that, he adds, it must reform the household registration system that ties social services to people's registered home, to facilitate family migration to cities and receive care there.

But in the short term, rural areas such as Qiantun, which has three times as many elderly residents as young adults, can only make do with the resources they have. The government provides 600 yuan ($97.68) a year in subsidies for each of the 30 elderly Qiantun villagers at the centre. Their average age is 75.

By contrast, offering professional care at an old-age care institution would cost a minimum of ten times as much, 6,000 yuan a year, according to government estimates, offset by a mere 120 yuan annual subsidy from the government.

At the Qiantun villager centre, "old" Zhang, as he is known, talks about the future as he brings a bowl of dumplings and medicine to the bedside of his charge, bedridden by a broken thigh bone.

"He can't move around now, I help him," said a still spry Zhang. "When I can't move, someone will also care for me."

How Hike, India's Fast Growing Mobile Messaging App, Is Banking On SMS & Local Diversity To Beat The Big Boys

HikeIt?s still practically a newborn but Indian mobile messaging app Hike is already channelling almost a billion messages a month between its 5m registered users. Those numbers sound insignificant when you stack them up against the big beasts of the messaging space ? WhatsApp claims 200m+ monthly active users, and 600bn messages ? but Hike?s growth is impressive when you consider it's 4 months old.

(AP) ? The glittering star power of Cannes migrated up the coast to Monaco for front-row seats at Dior's colorful, sexy cruise fashion show.

With the Mediterranean Sea the picturesque backdrop, Dior showcased its 2014 collection on Saturday night. It was a wet, cold and generally miserable outside the white stage, but Raf Simons' designs provided the shimmering summery lift for the evening.

Among those on hand were Oscar-winner and Dior spokeswoman Marion Cotillard, actresses Ruth Wilson and Jessica Biel, and Prince Albert of Monaco, along with his fashionable wife, Princess Charlene.

Before the show, Biel called Dior's fashions beautiful, saying she also appreciated them because they were made for real woman. If that was the case, such women are dynamic gazelles who even in their downtime have multiple agendas.

There were sheer lace cover-ups, brightly colored dresses, and jackets and coats made of wool.

In press materials provided at the show, Simons explained his inspiration to prominently feature lace in the collection.

"I never worked with lace before," he said. "It was about transforming the meaning of the material; not romantic, not historical, not old, to something light, playful, colorful and modern ? with energy."

Many of the pieces had an effervescent feel, like the metallic blended with sheer lace and a strip of a coral floral print in one dress; a wool jacket and pants were made vibrant with bright red color.

But there were other outfits that had a more traditional look, like a flowing spaghetti-strap red dress that hit mid-calf at the front but draped near the floor in the back, and the one-piece bathing suits that harkened back to old-style Hollywood glamour ? particularly a brilliant blue piece with ruching in the back.

After an enthusiastic ovation for the show, guests such as Liv Tyler were shuttled to the Oceanographic Museum nearby as Prince Albert and his wife threw a reception that showcased some of the fashions ? including Dior ? worn by his late mother, Princess Grace.

Meet Eric Gati of My4HrWorkWeek.com - Blogging Tips

One of my favorite things about the blogging niche is that so many people get started with their own blog to document their process for starting their own business and maybe even leaving their job. This is something that Eric has done with his blog over at My 4 Hour Workweek. The site is loaded up with great content for anyone who is looking to start their own blog or business online, but also goes into detail on Eric?s earnings, his niche sites and many of the other resources and experiences he had in the world of online marketing. Yet another awesome addition in the meet the bloggers interview series.

1.) Please tell us about yourself and how you got into blogging?

Very briefly about me: I?m a 28 year old CPA who lives in Chicago, and I have a little over 4 years of experience working at an accounting firm.? I like what I do, but I?ve always felt that there was more I could be doing outside of work.

For me, blogging was initially inspired by the book ?The 4-Hour Workweek?.? I knew I wanted to create some kind of income outside of my ?9 to 5? job, and I wanted a blog to document my journey.

So, in 2009, My 4-Hour Workweek was born.? Although the blog has grown in popularity over the past few years (now hovering around 25,000-30,000 visits per month, with over 8,000 subscribers between RSS and my Aweber e-mail list), I?m still a regular guy with a regular job.? I mention this not as a point of pride, but more as a partial explanation for why I haven?t achieved the great success that many other bloggers have (who you have interviewed in this series).? As much as I hate to admit it, my job as a CPA still comes first.

In a way, one of my goals is to show people that you can have a very time consuming ?day job? and still make some significant money online.

2.) What is the focus of your blog and why did you choose that niche?

The focus of my blog is really about my journey to create sources of online income (preferably passive income).? You could call it an ?internet marketing? blog, but it?s really much more than that ? and I definitely don?t consider myself an internet marketing ?expert? or ?guru?.

I like to think that one day, if/when I ?make it big?, someone else or I will be able to look back at all my posts and clearly see what led me to success, and more importantly, where I failed along the way.? I chose this niche because it allows me to discuss everything that I?m doing online to make money, all in one place.

3.) How are you currently monetizing your blog traffic?

Because I don?t sell ad space or use PPC ads like AdSense, my blog traffic is almost exclusively monetized using affiliate links.? My top income source is usually Commission Junction, where I earn affiliate income through hosting services, peer-to-peer lending, and other services/products offered through CJ (that are relevant to my readers).? Because my blog was not intended to be a source of my income online (it?s merely supposed to document my journey), I don?t aggressively try to monetize it.? However, it still happens to be the most lucrative part of my online business.

One of my recent successes was with this page that I was able to rank on page 1 of Google for the highly competitive phrase ?make money online? for the past 6+ months.? The ranking fluctuates quite a bit, as you would imagine ? at one point, I was ranked #2 on page 1, and currently, I?ve fallen to the second page (depending on where you look).? The crazy part is, I had no intention of ranking for that phrase, but nevertheless it turned out to be a great source of my blog?s income.

4.) What do you know now that you wish you knew when you first started blogging?

The importance of working hard and sticking with it despite slow growth initially.? It?s so easy to give up when you?re first starting out and not seeing results.? I know my first year of blogging was nearly wasted because I didn?t think anyone would ever read my writing.? If I would?ve put a little bit more effort in early on, and started many projects sooner, I probably would be a lot further ahead today.

5.) What are three blogs that you visit almost daily?

1.? Smart Passive Income
2.? Quick Sprout
3.? Niche Pursuits

6.) Can you give us three recommended tools/services that you use with your blogging?

Because I know most bloggers use WordPress, here are 3 plugins that I find helpful:

1.? WordPress SEO by Joost ? This is probably the only SEO plugin most blogger?s need, as it makes just about everything SEO-related easier for you.
2.? Tweet Old Post ? A great way to give some love to your older blog posts automatically ? I use this on a few of my blogs, and it works quite well.
3.? Sharebar ? An attractive way to add sharing buttons (Tweet, ?Like?, etc.) to your blog posts.

7.) What advice would you have for someone who is just starting with their first blog?

1.? Keep pushing forward.? As I mentioned above, it?s so easy to give up when you?re starting out.? Success (except in very rare occasions) doesn?t happen quickly.? And even those who appear to succeed quickly probably had many earlier failures that you just aren?t aware of.

2.? Work hard and be consistent.? This probably applies to many areas of life, but it?s especially true with blogging.? Fight the urge to be lazy ? if you planned to blog three times a week, hold yourself to that schedule.? And as a side note, don?t sacrifice quality just to publish a blog post.? Once you?ve start putting out quality content with a level of consistency, you will find that your audience will return with consistency.

8.) What?s the best advice or tip you?ve discovered about blogging since getting started?

Build relationships ? even though most of your online relationships are virtual, they can have a very real impact on your blog?s success.? You can build relationships by starting small and doing something as simple as leaving a comment on another blog in your niche.

Get to know people, and don?t immediately jump on the opportunity to ask for something.? Strong relationships are built on a two way street, and the best thing you can do is offer value without expecting anything in return.? Don?t worry, good things will come.

9.) If you only had $100 to start a new blog, how would you use it?

I would probably buy hosting, a domain, and good keyword research software (such as Market Samurai or Long Tail Pro).? You won?t know how to use it right away, but there is plenty of free information out there to show you how to use it.

I wouldn?t spend a dime on any eBooks or training courses (with a few exceptions) ? again, there is a wealth of free information on the internet, and if you?re willing to invest your time, you can do most things without spending any money.

10.) How can readers of the blog get in touch with you?

College women exceed NIAAA drinking guidelines more frequently than college men

May 18, 2013 ? In order to avoid harms associated with alcohol consumption, in 2009 the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism issued guidelines that define low-risk drinking. These guidelines differ for men and women: no more than four drinks per day, and 14 drinks per week for men, and no more than three drinks per day, and seven drinks per week for women. A study of how well college students adhere to these limits has found that female college student drinkers exceed national drinking guidelines for weekly drinking more frequently than their male counterparts.

Results will be published in the October 2013 issue of Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research and are currently available at Early View.

"Recommended drinking limits are lower for women than for men because research to date has found that women experience alcohol-related problems at lower levels of alcohol consumption than men," explained Bettina B. Hoeppner of the Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Addiction Medicine, an assistant professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School as well as corresponding author for the study.

"It is always important to take gender into account when studying health or risk behaviors," added Melissa A. Lewis, associate professor in the department of psychiatry and behavioral sciences at the University of Washington. "Even if you hold weight constant, there are differences in terms of how alcohol affects men and women. For example, men have more of an enzyme in the stomach -- a gastric alcohol dehydrogenase -- that lowers the amount of alcohol that makes it into the bloodstream. Also, women have less blood going through the bloodstream than a man at the same weight, so alcohol gets more concentrated in the bloodstream."

For this study, Hoeppner and her colleagues asked 992 college students (575 females, 417 males) to report their daily drinking habits on a biweekly basis, using web-based surveys throughout their first year of college.

"We found that female college-student drinkers exceeded national drinking guidelines for weekly drinking more frequently than their male counterparts," said Hoeppner. "Weekly cut-offs are recommended to prevent long-term harmful effects due to alcohol, such as liver disease and breast cancer. By exceeding weekly limits more often than men, women are putting themselves at increased risk for experiencing such long-term effects."

"In addition," said Lewis, "men's weekly drinking declined over time whereas women's weekly drinking did not. This finding is concerning. If women continue to exceed weekly drinking recommendations over time, it puts them at greater risk for health issues, such as liver or heart disease and certain forms of cancer."

"These findings contribute to our understanding of how populations adhere to national drinking guidelines," said Hoeppner. "Specifically, it examines college student drinkers, where adherence to weekly drinking limits has not been examined before. Generally, 'binge drinking' receives more attention when examining college student drinking, however, for long-term health, it is also important to examine the establishment of drinking patterns that may lead to long-term harmful effects, not just short-term effects."

"These findings highlight the need for prevention efforts to focus on both daily and weekly limits to reduce harm from short- and long-term negative consequences related to alcohol use," said Lewis. "Current preventative interventions often do not focus on weekly drinking recommendations, which is important and a warranted area of future research.

Hoeppner agreed. "Our results might motivate clinicians to address weekly drinking limits and the potential for long-term alcohol related harm with their patients," she said. "The reasons that many college students exceed these weekly limits are unclear. It is possible that lack of awareness of the guidelines and possible consequences of exceeding them contributes to these high rates. If so, clinicians might reduce harm by educating their college-student patients about the guidelines and the harm they seek to prevent, especially their female patients. Similarly, researchers and clinicians designing prevention/intervention programs might find it useful to address weekly drinking limits in their programs, both to reduce incidence rates thereof, and to identify the reasons for exceeding these guidelines."

Breast Cancer: One Disease, Three Stories | @pritheworld

Gertrude Nakigudde is an accountant in Kampala, Uganda. I?m a freelance reporter and journalism instructor in Seattle. Angelina Jolie is, well, Angelina Jolie.

We?ve all had mastectomies, and we?ve all nursed parents through their final days with breast cancer. (In Gertrude?s case it was her father ? men get breast cancer, too.)

Angelina?s announcement ? that she underwent a double mastectomy to prevent breast cancer ? got me thinking about how differently the breast cancer experience can play out.

I met Gertrude, the accountant in Uganda, while working on a series about cancer in developing countries for The World. What really gets Gertrude?s eyes blazing is talking about her public relations and advocacy work for the Uganda Women?s Cancer Support Organization (UWOCASO), a 40-woman-strong group of breast cancer survivors in a country where breast cancer is deeply stigmatized.

?When you talk about cancer, it is translated into death,? she told me. ?Here they believe it is an untreatable disease.? Women with breast cancer don?t want their neighbors to know ? no one would marry their children. Women don?t go for medical care when they notice lumps. ?They don?t know the danger in that lump,? Gertrude said. She herself waited a year. Her family said to ignore the lump. She went only when it became painful. And, at first, she didn?t know where to go, and no one else she knew had any idea. After a costly series of misdiagnoses and failed treatments, she finally got a mastectomy and chemotherapy.

My story in many ways is completely different. I live in Seattle, home of some of the world?s best cancer care. I?m fully insured. My husband and family have been enormously supportive. And there?s certainly no stigma against breast cancer in the US. (There are days when I think if I see one more pink ribbon, I?ll scream.)

But Gertrude and I share some things, as well. We both were scared when we got our initial diagnoses. Like Angelina Jolie, we?ve experienced the searing pain of watching a parent die of breast cancer. We were both really angry about our diagnoses. And now we are both very grateful about being survivors ? though, at 10 years out, Gertrude is much more confident about it than I am, at 2.5 years.

Gertrude heard about Angelina?s surgery online. A prophylactic mastectomy would be a near-impossible decision for Ugandan women, Gertrude wrote me this week, not just for monetary reasons but because of stigma and lack of medical literacy. ?Women here refuse mastectomy for a sick breast,? she said. ?I cannot imagine they will do it before the disease.?

What she hopes will make a difference is Angelina?s observation that most breast cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and her call for all women, ?whatever their means and background, wherever they live,? to have access to prevention and treatment methods. Gertrude said Angelina?s story will increase awareness about breast cancer.

But Gertrude is not so sure how it will help her own cancer survivors? group. The bottom line is money. UWOCASO is struggling to educate Ugandans about breast cancer. Their website is down at the moment. They haven?t been able to raise the $200 needed to renew it.

Joanne Silberner is an artist-in-residence at the University of Washington, and a multimedia journalist. She?s been covering medicine, global health and health policy issues for 30 years, including 18 years at NPR. You can listen to an audio story about Joanne and Gertrude below or at PRX.

From The World?s ?Cancer?s New Battleground ? the Developing World? series: When Victoria Contreras was diagnosed with breast cancer, she felt frightened and isolated. She rediscovered hope and community at the Breast Club, a local support group in Lima, Peru.

Brian Krzanich takes the reins at Intel today

Image

Today's the day, trivia fans, when "Paul Otellini" stops being the answer to the question "Who is the CEO of Intel?" A fortnight ago, after a prolonged bout of speculation, current COO Brian Krznich was anointed as the Silicon Valley giant's sixth leader -- giving him a mere two weeks to order a new desk and buy a fancier sports car. He'll be joined by Renée James, who is assuming the mantle of company president today. The pair is taking control of a company that is top of the PC food chain, but which has yet to mount a credible challenge to ARM's mobile dominance -- but the strategic stuff can wait until tomorrow, once they've settled in.

Wonderful Tips To Achieve Success With Online Marketing ? Hot ...

Internet marketing can be a lot of work and there are so many ways that someone can either, improve upon the program or change the program entirely. So whether you need more techniques to help promote your site or if you?re looking for a new program to promote your site, take a look at the tips below.

Increasing your productivity in web marketing is about mindset just as much as it is about action. So in order to make sure you have the proper mindset, you should always wait until you experience results before increasing your campaign. Results will give you the confidence to grow and the drive to follow through.

Although it?s a bad idea for an affiliate to act as if they?re totally in love with a product, since it turns the potential customer off, it is still wise to link to the company?s pre-sell product pitch. As long as you have read the pitch and find it to be tasteful, authoritative and relevant, you should send your traffic there.

When you are marketing supplements, make sure that you understand the difference between supplements that are designed to address and illness and those designed for general health. When selling general health supplements, your market is going to be health nuts and body builders, while illness-related supplements are probably going to have a smaller market of people with that illness.

Web marketing need not be your website?s sole revenue stream. The same site that generates affiliate money can also use other advertisement strategies, like Google adSense. In order to maximize effectiveness, though, it is best to keep some separation between your advertisers. Avoid working with two advertisers offering similar products to prevent them from cannibalizing potential customers off of each other.

Make your site helpful to your readers. Don?t make affiliate products the ?meat? of your site; provide useful content and good information, then add affiliate products that complement the information you are providing. Instead of just listing a bunch of links for books you want people to buy, write an actual review of each book. This adds value for your readers and for doing the work, you deserve something in return.

Add content that your readers want along with your affiliate links. If you provide reasons for your audience to click on your links, you will find much better success. If you just type a list of baby items you like with links, you?ll receive much less response than if you type reviews and why you loved these items.

Try to only check your email two times a day so that you?ll be completely focused on your work instead. You can even set your email program to only pick up email every 12 hours to ensure you?re not peeking when you should actually be writing content, creating graphics, or reading more about your web marketing programs.

Any affiliate company you choose to work with should offer you a wide range of materials to use. It is in a company?s best interest to help its affiliates generate traffic so that everyone can profit. So if a company is not offering resources for you, you should realize that this company is not worth working for.

If you are a vendor you need to keep the following in mind. Just as you would respond to e-mails and phone calls from customers, you must also quickly respond to questions and concerns from your affiliates. Responding to affiliates is a critical part of enabling their success, which in turn brings you success. Poor communication will drive away quality affiliates who would have brought in high sales numbers. As the number of affiliates you have starts to grow, keep in mind that you may need to hire and train support staff that deal specifically with affiliate inquiries. If you are an affiliate, don?t waste your time with vendors who don?t take your communications seriously.

When setting up your site for affiliate marketing, make sure that your layout goes with the products that you have available. You will want to portray a certain image and it is important for your layout to help you do this. Your audience may become confused if you have a site that has nothing to do with the products you are showing.

As was mentioned before in the article, affiliate programs can be a very nice source of income. However, if you?re lazy and uninterested in making your site attractive to your audience, your site will surely fail. You need to put in your time and effort if you want to see any rewards.

Google Glass to get CNN, Elle, Twitter, Tumblr, Evernote and Facebook apps soon

The I/O news faucet hasn't quite dried up yet. During the San Francisco conference today, Google chatted up some new Glass apps. The new applications will come packaged as "Glassware," delivering CNN breaking news alerts, Twitter, Tumblr and Facebook posts, Evernote reminders and articles from Elle Magazine. The New York Times and Path were the only two apps previously available to Explorers, making this new suite of products a very welcome addition indeed. More apps are no doubt on the way -- hundreds of developers are working to produce their own software for the Google-branded headgear, which is set to launch for consumers sometime next year.

Report: Microsoft Wants to Buy Nook for $1 Billion

TechCrunch is reporting that Microsoft, which has already made an interesting $300 million investment in Nook, wants to double down and buy the whole darn thing. Specifically, Microsoft wants to pay $1 billion to acquire the digital assets of Nook Media LLC?that would be the separate Nook company that spun off from Barnes & Noble last year. Microsoft wants its own Kindle (or iBooks) store.

TechCrunch explains the internal documents that show that Microsoft is interested in the e-reader ecosystem that is not named Kindle (which continues Redmond's trend of being the search engine not named Google, the phone not named iPhone or Android, etc.):

In this plan, Microsoft would redeem preferred units in Nook Media, which also includes a college textbook division, leaving it with the digital operation ? e-books, as well as Nook e-readers and tablets.

So Nooks will continue to exist. But not all of them. The internal documents show that Nook is planning to discontinue the Android-based tablet business by the end of its 2014 fiscal year and push Nook content to a 'third party partner'. I guess that 'third party partner' would have been Microsoft? Or other Android tablets too? Who knows. The internal documents do not show Nook planning to discontinue the Nook e-readers, however. G2 Crowd Takes On Gartner Magic Quadrant With Crowdsourced Review Platform

g2-crowdG2 Crowd wants to disrupt Gartner’s Magic Quadrant through a real-time, crowdsourced platform of peer reviews and social analytics targeting the CRM and marketing automation markets. ?The new “Grids” service launches June 1. The platform, free to explore, analyzes and correlates about 15,000 peer reviews that it has aggregated since its launch in February. CEO Abel Goddard says G2 Crowd will sell access to its crowdsourced data and provide comparison tools that customers can use. The value is in the data and how it is segmented. Customers now pay a one-time fee of $199 to get the CRM data. Abel envisions it becoming a subscription model. Grids feeds peer reviews, web traffic, Twitter, LinkedIn, ?and other social media data into an algorithm to determine how companies are perceived. The peer reviews are weighted more heavily than other data. Reviews so far put Salesforce.com and Microsoft Dynamics in the lead for the CRM market. Leading marketing automation companies include Marketo, Pardot and Hubspot. G2 Crowd will eventually add more market segments to its Grids platform. CRM Software Comparison Gartner’s Magic Quadrant has helped it reach $1.6 billion in revenues. The methods it uses for Magic Quadrant rely on analysts, each of whom are specialists in their fields. These analysts talk with customers, conduct market research through Gartner and then define the leaders. Due to the amount of research required, Gartner often has to limit the number of companies in the market that it reviews, Abel said. Startups and smaller companies, while they may be innovative, don’t get an analyst’s attention. By contrast,?G2 Crowd’s reviewers determine what companies get reviewed, helping customers get a picture of the market, as well as large and small companies. Prior to starting G2 Crowd, Abel founded Big Machines, a sales configuration vendor that grew to $50 million in revenues before being sold to private-equity partners. In the 11 years he ran the business, Abel said they would pay $75,000 per year to Gartner, whose?customers often are the companies it researches and ranks. The payment gave them access to the analysts and their presence at events, including user conferences. Abel believes, and so do many in the tech market, that this kind of relationship affects how Garner does its reviews. Abel says it’s similar to Wall Street analysts that get paid by the customers it researches. The sales model has changed as the Internet has emerged as

You Can Download Any Spotify Song as an MP3 With This Chrome Extension

At long last, Spotify has launched the web-based interface it introduced last year. Unfortunately, it left a gaping security vulnerability that leaves the songs wide-open to download with a simple Chrome extension. (Update below)

I just downloaded a brand new record by a very popular recording artist in less than 10 seconds using this extension. This is definitely illegal. And who knows what else the illegal software is downloading to your computer. Do with this knowledge what you will. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.

According to the developer of Downloadify, Spotify neglected to encrypt the MP3s coming across the web to your browser to your ears. They even suggest a potential fix for the problem. Until the problem is fixed, Downloadify will let you pull down an MP3 of any track just by double-clicking it. We've just now emailed Spotify for comment, and we wouldn't expect the vulnerability to last too much longer. Ouchie for Spotify. [Tweakers via The Verge]

Update 1

It appears Downloadify has been pulled from the the Chrome store. If it's already installed on your computer (or you can find another way to get it) it still works.

Update 2

Here's a very special message from the man supposedly behind Downloadify:

  • "CSI: NY"

<strong>"CSI: NY," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: On the bubble <strong>Why</strong>: The spinoff series will be entering Season 10 in the 2013-2014 season. The ratings have faded over the years, but they're still pretty stable, especially for Fridays. It's a toss up, depending on how well CBS's development slate goes.

  • "Elementary"

<strong>"Elementary," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: One of the very few freshman series hits during the 2012-2013 TV season, CBS is very keen on this modern-day take on Sherlock Holmes. The audience has been steady and the network even gave it the post-Super Bowl timeslot.

  • "Golden Boy"

<strong>"Golden Boy," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Too soon to tell <strong>Why</strong>: CBS certainly has a handsome star at the front of this cop drama, but its late season entry and Friday timeslot could be a hint toward CBS's confidence in the show.

  • "The Good Wife"

<strong>"The Good Wife," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: A former ratings champ, "The Good Wife" has slipped to series low ratings on Sunday nights. Blame football overrun, fan-detested storylines or too many guest stars, but "The Good Wife" has star power and critical praise, plus its nearing a good syndication sweet spot.

  • "NCIS: LA"

<strong>"NCIS: LA," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: Viewers love their "NCIS," in any form. The ratings have been strong and the network is producing a backdoor spinoff pilot for this spinoff show. A full night of "NCIS" could be in CBS's future.

  • "Partners"

<strong>"Partners," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Canceled <strong>Why</strong>: Low ratings and unfavorable reviews led to the <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/11/16/partners-canceled-cbs_n_2145832.html">early demise</a> of this CBS comedy.

  • "Person of Interest"

<strong>"Person of Interest," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: The series has developed a nice-sized audience, bigger than its first season.

  • "Rules of Engagement"

<strong>"Rules of Engagement," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Honestly, who knows <strong>Why</strong>: This comedy has been on the bubble since it premiered ... yet is now in its seventh season. It's too soon to look at the numbers for this season, but the show has been a midseason success for CBS in the past. However, series co-star <a href="http://insidetv.ew.com/2013/02/07/cbs-orders-comedy-pilot-starring-patrick-warburton/">Patrick Warburton is attached to star in a new pilot</a> ... for CBS.

  • "Survivor"

<strong>"Survivor," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: A strong player for the last 13 years, "Survivor" will be back. But due to its <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/02/14/survivor-ratings-lowest-premiere-ever_n_2687591.html">most recent premiere ratings</a>, we might not see it during the fall season, though a midseason or summer return -- with some new gimmick -- is definitely in the cards for the reality series.

  • "Two and a Half Men"

<strong>"Two and a Half Men," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: CBS always wanted another season of this bawdy hit, it was just a matter of getting its stars to sign back on. Though Jon Cryer and Ashton Kutcher will be back for a Season 11, the "half" man Angus T. Jones remains up in the air.

  • "Undercover Boss"

<strong>"Undercover Boss," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Renewed <strong>Why</strong>: The show is enjoying life in syndication and its Season 4 numbers are better than most of its third season.

  • "Unforgettable"

<strong>"Unforgettable," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: Uncanceled <strong>Why</strong>: CBS canceled the Poppy Montgomery drama last season ... and then revived it! Season 2 premieres Sunday, July 28.

  • "Vegas"

<strong>"Vegas," CBS</strong> <strong>Status</strong>: On the bubble <strong>Why</strong>: Despite star power, the series hasn't been a breakout hit in the ratings. CBS previously canceled "Unforgettable" (then uncanceled it) last season when it was doing about the same as "Vegas."

NASA's Mars Curiosity rover sends pictures after communications gap

    NASA / JPL-Caltech

A Martian view from one of Curiosity's hazard avoidance cameras, transmitted back to Earth on Thursday, shows the shadow of the instrument turret on the rover's robotic arm.

By Alan Boyle, Science Editor, NBC News

NASA's Curiosity rover is back in business after a weeks-long communication gap caused by solar interference. The proof comes in the form of pictures transmitted back to Earth on Thursday from the 1-ton machine's vantage point at Yellowknife Bay on Mars.

"Can you hear me now? Conjunction is over. I have a clear view of Earth & am back to work!" the rover tweeted (with a little help from her entourage at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory).

Dozens of raw images are on display on NASA's Mars Curiosity website, featuring rocky terrain in the foreground and the 3-mile-high (5-kilometer-high) peak known as Mount Sharp or Aeolis Mons in the background. Other Mars probes, including the Opportunity rover, Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, are back at work as well.

NASA's Red Planet probes were on hiatus for most of April due to an unfavorable alignment of Mars, Earth and the sun. During solar conjunction, the sun gets in the way of the communication lines between the two planets, and mission controllers generally put science operations on hold. Such conjunctions occur every 26 months. Opportunity has gone through several communication breaks during its nine years on Mars, but this is the first one to occur since Curiosity landed last August.

The spacecraft weren't completely idle during the break: Curiosity conducted in-place investigations and sent back limited transmissions via X-band radio to let controllers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory know that it was doing OK. Opportunity autonomously flipped its computer into safe mode during the break, apparently due to a glitch involving a routine camera check. A fresh set of software commands fixed the glitch, and on Wednesday controllers reported that Opportunity was back in working order.

Curiosity is due for its own software upgrade, and then the rover is scheduled to drill out a second sample of ground-up rock for analysis. The first sample, analyzed in March, suggested that the Yellowknife Bay environment was potentially habitable billions of years ago. Scientists want to use the follow-up sample to confirm what they saw in previous chemical analyses.

After Curiosity finishes up its work in Yellowknife Bay and its surroundings in the Glenelg area of Gale Crater, controllers plan to point the rover toward Mount Sharp, 6 miles (10 kilometers) away. The science team suspects that the mountain's many layers of rock will hold further evidence of ancient organic chemistry.
